Capdepera is a municipality located in the northeastern part of Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands of Spain. The town is situated approximately 80 kilometers from Palma, the island's capital. As of 2025, the municipality had a population of around 13,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 54.95 square kilometers.
The municipality includes several settlements, with the main town of Capdepera and the coastal resort of Cala Ratjada being the most significant. Cala Ratjada, located on the easternmost point of Mallorca, developed into a major tourist destination during the second half of the 20th century.
The Castle of Capdepera stands as the town's most prominent landmark. Built in the 14th century during the reign of King James II of Mallorca, the fortress was constructed to protect the local population from pirate raids and invasions. The castle walls enclose an area containing narrow streets and houses, along with the Gothic church of Santa Maria de la Esperanza. The fortification represents one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Mallorca.
The local economy traditionally relied on agriculture, particularly almond cultivation, and fishing. Tourism emerged as the dominant economic sector from the 1960s onwards, transforming Cala Ratjada into a popular holiday destination, particularly among German tourists. The area features numerous beaches and coves, including Cala Agulla, Cala Mesquida, and Cala Gat.
The Capdepera Lighthouse, constructed in 1861, is located at Punta Capdepera, marking the easternmost point of Mallorca. The lighthouse stands at 76 meters above sea level.
The municipality is home to several natural areas of interest. Cala Mesquida beach is backed by a protected dune system and pine forest. The area around Capdepera contains various archaeological sites, including the prehistoric settlement of Claper des Gegant, evidence of human presence dating back to the Talayotic period.
The parish church of Sant Bartomeu in the town center dates from the 19th century, though it was built on the site of an earlier medieval church. The annual medieval market, held in May, recreates historical scenes and attracts thousands of visitors to the castle grounds.
