The town is situated around a natural harbor, which is one of the largest and best-protected natural ports on the island. The harbor extends approximately 1 kilometer inland and has been used as a safe anchorage for centuries. Local tradition claims that Christopher Columbus was born in Portocolom, though this is not historically verified and Genoa, Italy remains the generally accepted birthplace.

Portocolom has a permanent population of around 4,700 residents, which increases significantly during the summer tourist season.

The town's economy historically relied on fishing and agriculture, particularly wine production from the surrounding vineyards. While fishing remains active, tourism has become increasingly important since the late 20th century. The harbor still functions as a working fishing port, with a small fleet operating from the port.

The lighthouse of Portocolom, known as Far de Portocolom, was constructed in 1863 and stands at the entrance to the harbor on Punta de ses Crestes. It marks the eastern approach to the natural harbor.

Portocolom has maintained much of its traditional Mallorcan character, with fewer large-scale hotel developments compared to other coastal areas of Mallorca. The town center features typical Mediterranean architecture with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. The waterfront area includes several beaches, with Cala Marcal being the largest nearby beach resort.

The port consists of two main areas: the inner harbor where fishing boats and small vessels are moored, and the outer harbor used by larger sailing yachts and recreational boats.
