About Municipalities of Mallorca
Municipalities of Mallorca are the administrative divisions of the island of Mallorca, the largest island in the Balearic archipelago of Spain. The island is divided into 53 municipalities, each with its own local government and mayor. These municipalities vary significantly in size, population, and character, ranging from the densely populated capital city to small rural villages.
Palma is the largest municipality by far, serving as both the island's capital and the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. With a population exceeding 430,000 residents, Palma accounts for more than half of Mallorca's total population.
The municipalities are grouped into six traditional comarques or regions: Palma, Serra de Tramuntana, Raiguer, Pla de Mallorca, Migjorn, and Llevant. The Serra de Tramuntana region, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, includes municipalities such as Sóller, Valldemossa, and Deià, known for their mountainous terrain and scenic beauty. The coastal municipalities, particularly in the south and east, have experienced significant development due to tourism, with areas like Calvià and Manacor becoming major tourist destinations.
Each municipality has autonomy in local matters including urban planning, local taxation, and public services. The smallest municipalities by population include Estellencs and Escorca, each with fewer than 300 inhabitants.
Manacor is the second-largest municipality by population and the largest by land area. It is located in the eastern part of the island and is known for its pearl industry and as the birthplace of tennis player Rafael Nadal.
